Meet Mary and Lenora, dedicated Food Pantry volunteers

Mary has been volunteering at JFS’s Community Food Pantry for several years, stocking and organizing the food on the shelves as well as helping clients get the food they need for the upcoming month.

“So many nice people who are in need come in,” Mary said, adding that it was a “real eye-opener” for her to meet so many people who need food assistance in the Lehigh Valley. Many clients who she has helped have major medical problems and are unable to work. “I’m happy that we can help them get the food they need,” Mary said.

Mary enjoyed her time volunteering at the pantry so much that she has recruited two other volunteers. One friend, Lenora, joined Mary to work in a similar capacity at the pantry.

A year and a half later, both Mary and Lenora still volunteer at the pantry. “It’s the most satisfying experience. I get a great deal of joy from it,” Lenora said.

Lenora’s favorite part of the job is meeting the people and getting to know them. She is particularly impressed with the clients’ generosity, finding that they will often say to give any food beyond a necessity to people who need it more.

Volunteering at the Community Food Pantry is “an overall wonderful experience for me” thanks to the clients and “friendly and welcoming” JFS staff, Lenora said.

Both Mary and Lenora look forward to continuing their involvement with JFS and making a difference in clients’ lives.
