JFS 50th Anniversary: A Four-Part Celebration!

In 1972, forward-thinking leaders of the Jewish Federation of Allentown began the process which led to the creation of the Jewish Family Service of the Jewish Federation of Allentown. With the growth of the agency and its programs, in 1984 JFS became incorporated as an independent agency and the name was changed to the Jewish Family Service of the Lehigh Valley.

Now, in January 2022, JFSLV is proud and pleased to begin a four-part celebration of its Golden Anniversary – 50 years of helping people to lead better lives. The observances will be consistent with the agency’s mission to be “guided by Jewish values” as it “helps individuals and families to live healthier and more stable lives.” We will celebrate with ma-asim tovim – good deeds, with learning, with appreciation for past achievements and with respect for our supporters, who have given their time as volunteers and who have given their resources. Our valued and outstanding staff, from the beginning of JFS to the present one under the leadership of Debbie Zoller, in partnership with dedicated community members, have allowed JFS to expand its programs and increase its impact.

We will begin this month with the first of our 50 Acts of Kindness.  Suggested by our immediate past president, Wendy Born, and chaired by board member, Stuart Horowitz, from January through December 2022, JFS will give the entire Jewish community an opportunity to participate in helping others across the Lehigh Valley. Please check HAKOL each month to see what projects are planned and feel free to volunteer for one or more of them. Under the leadership of board co-chairs Emily Ford and Kimberly Valuntas, JFS will offer the community three lectures including our annual JDAIM (Jewish Disability Awareness, Advocacy & Inclusion Month) lecture in February and the Phyllis Ringel Memorial Lecture in May. We will celebrate past achievements and future programs at a special 50th Anniversary event, where we will debut the 50th history video, featuring past JFS staff, executive directors, presidents and others. We hope you will join us for the major community event in November 2022.
