Children who have trouble reading don’t do great in school. It’s true no matter what the subject, from social studies to science, language arts to math. ProJeCt of Easton is doing what it can to improve the situation for at-risk kids in the Easton Area School District.
Every year, the organization’s seven-week Sizzle! summer camp helps students from kindergarten through fifth grade develop their reading skills. This year, as part of the Jewish Family Service’s 50 Acts of Kindness initiative for its 50th anniversary year, Sue Sosnow and Ellen Hof, JFS board members and congregants of Bnai Shalom in Easton, collected books for Sizzle!
The donated books add to the variety of titles children can choose from as certified teachers work with them to counter the “summer slide” of learning loss. The goal is for the kids to finish the camp reading at the same level or higher than they’d reached during the school year.
